The information below represents some of the calls for service handled by the Verona Police Department between Friday (4/21) evening and Monday (4/23) morning. This information is not all-inclusive, but rather preliminary information gathered from officers who investigated the calls.
- 4/22/23 @ 2:08 a.m. – An officer stopped a vehicle to inform the driver (47 of Madison) one of his headlights was not working. The officer detected signs of impairment and requested the driver perform a series of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. The driver was arrested for OWI – 1st Offense. The driver refused to provide an evidentiary breath test and the officer applied for a search warrant to obtain a sample of the driver’s blood, which was granted by a judge.
- 4/22/23 @ 3:18 a.m. – Officers were advised deputies of the Iowa County Sheriff's Office were pursuing a vehicle eastbound on US Highway 18/151 which was failing to stop for them. Mount Horeb PD and Dane County Sheriff’s deputies set up spike strips and assisted with the pursuit, and after being spiked several times, the vehicle came to a stop just west of Verona. VPD assisted with taking the driver into custody.
- 4/22/23 @ 9:00 a.m. – VPD hosted a community Prescription Drug Takeback event from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. In total, 270 pounds of prescription medications were turned in and will be disposed of properly.
- 4/22/23 @ 11:30 a.m. – As a part of ensuring your home or property is secured and protected when you are not there, citizens can submit a Vacation Watch / Vacant House Registration form to VPD. As time and availability permits, officers will perform security checks at your home or property, in which they will ensure doors and windows are locked and also look for suspicious or unusual conditions. In the past, officers have located natural gas leaks, ruptured water pipes, and many other circumstances which required immediate attention. On Saturday morning, an officer performed several vacant property checks and found everything secure and normal.
- 4/22/23 @ 3:49 p.m. – VPD officers assisted FitchRona EMS and Fitchburg PD with an individual who was found in a vehicle in traffic, unconscious and not breathing. VPD assisted with conducting traffic control and loading the patient into the ambulance. The 75-year-old patient regained a pulse because of life-saving efforts prior to being transported.
- 4/22/23 @ 8:34 p.m. – Officers were dispatched to a burglary alarm at a business. It was determined to be a false alarm.
- 4/22/23 @ 8:11 p.m. – Officers were dispatched to a 911 phone call disconnection in which the coordinates of the caller were plotting at a bar. The caller would not answer return telephone calls, so officers stopped at the bar. The bartender reported no problems.
- 4/22/23 @ 12:11 a.m. – Officers were dispatched to a burglary alarm at a business. Officers checked the property and there was nothing suspicious found. A business keyholder was contacted, who said they would respond and further check the business.
- 4/23/23 @ 7:54 p.m. – The Dane County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the Badger Prairie County Park for a report of a several vehicles which had window smashed out and items stolen. VPD officers responded to a location in Verona because a stolen phone was plotting there; however, the suspect(s) was not located, and the phone was turned off and could no longer be tracked.
- 4/23/23 @ 2:27 a.m. – VPD set up the speed monitoring trailer on CTH M near Range Trail. The speed monitoring trailer collects time and speed data, which in turn officers use to optimize speed education and enforcement for that area.
