Permit Requirements
Permits are required any time you build a new deck or patio, or when you enlarge or make any structural alterations to an existing deck or patio.

In order to obtain a permit, the following items are needed:
  • Permit Application Form (PDF) completed
  • Site plan showing the following:
    • Lot dimensions
    • House placement
    • Easements
    • Building setbacks from lot lines and easements
    • Deck setbacks from lot lines and easements
  • Building plan showing the following:
    • Floor plan with:
      • Proposed deck or patio size
      • Decks- size and spacing of floor joists
      • Decks- size and type of decking material
      • Decks- size, type, location, and spacing of posts
      • Decks- size and type of beams
    • Elevation plan with:
      • Decks- height of structure from grade
      • Decks- size and depth of footings
      • Decks- guard height and spacing (if any)
      • Decks- stairway rise/run and handrail height (if any)
      • Decks- clearance of over-head wires (if applicable)
  • Effective January 1, 2016, The Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code Appendix B contains design specifications for decks.  Decks constructed to that Code are considered compliant.  Any alterations or modifications outside Appendix B must be done through structural analysis and submitted to the City of Verona for review and approval.
